UNDER CONSTRUCTION
Between the historic centre of Faro and its beach, in the Montenegro area, there was a building constructed in the 1970s. The intention of the project was to renovate it, to create tourist accommodation units. Influenced by the culture of the Algarve's thriving modernist architecture, as well as the local Arab heritage, the building was both simple and playful, with plastic elements that would serve as inspiration for the new project.
In order to adapt to current construction, seismic and sustainability requirements, the original building could not be maintained. However, its matrix was preserved, while the new project incorporated the modernist references and the Mudejar spirit of the original building.
This continuity is reflected throughout the project, in aspects such as the insertion of the patios, access via external galleries and the translucent panels of perforated brick. Particularly relevant is the geometric heritage of the diamond, a shape present on the façades of the old building, which in the project also generates spaces, creating diagonal encounters and reinforcing the building's visual sense. The project also associates the stairs with the galleries and courtyards, giving new relevance to those architectural elements.
As a result, the project features 13 accommodation units, all with direct contact with the outdoor spaces, luminous and enlivened by a diagonal coloured wall that houses the private bathrooms, the kitchenette and additional beds. The units are complemented by communal social and leisure areas, and outdoor spaces. In the exterior areas there is a pool that creates an intentionally Mediterranean combination of water and patio. The accessible terraces resemble the “açoteias” of the traditional local architecture.
In terms of finishings, the project uses mineral and natural materials, such as vibrant whitewash paint, traditional hydraulic mosaic flooring and wainscoting, or colourful carpentry. The modernist plasticity of the project is complemented by the use of pure colours in specific elements, bringing tones to the natural light of each accommodation unit, making each space unique within the building.
